This has been the summer from Hades if you ask me. Many of my patients ask me about hydration and many don’t understand it’s not just about water. Have you ever asked yourself these questions: 1- what’s the best water bottle or container 2- what’s the best type of water 3- how much is enough? Although hydration is a subject much larger than this one blog, I’ll answer those 3 most common questions above.
1- What kind of container? Plastic is easy, disposable, and inexpensive but comes with a price. Plastics can contain harsh chemicals that disrupt hormones and poison our cells from within. BPA etc. Especially if left in the heat. Don’t buy water bottles that have been in a hot warehouse or truck or outside for sale. This type of treatment can increase cancer especially breast in men and women and can cause bleeding and hormone disorders. Stainless steel is good but but can be lined with BPA like substances. Same thing. Glass is good also and there are holders that cover the outside to prevent breakage. Plastic can be ok but not stored in the heat and look for the recyclable triangle and number. Maybe, but how far does it stay alkalized after the stomach? Your best bet is electrolyte water or safely bottled you add your own electrolytes to. Sugar and artificial sweetener free (only Stevia or Monk fruit for me) and either a pinch of Himalayan Salt or electrolyte drinks packs.
3- How much is enough? So you don’t feel thirsty. When you feel thirsty you are already 30% dehydrated. In this heat?
So how much fluid does the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is:

But you need more in the heat or with exercise.
Although this subject is enormous, I hope this information starts you on the path to staying hydrated until football season carries us to cooler weather and you know how ready I am for football!!!
